Introduction to Negative Sentences

Welcome to Day 14! Today, you'll learn how to form negative sentences in English. Negative sentences express denial, refusal, or contradiction. They are essential for everyday communication.

Learning Tip: In English, we usually make sentences negative by adding "not" after the helping verb (am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had, do, does, did, can, will, etc.).
Important Note

Negative sentences in English always need a helping verb (auxiliary verb) except for sentences with the verb "to be" (am, is, are, was, were) which can be directly followed by "not".

Basic Negation with "NOT"

The most common way to make a sentence negative is by adding "not" after the helping verb.

Positive Sentence

I am a student.
నేను ఒక విద్యార్థిని/విద్యార్థి.
Pronunciation: ఐ యామ్ అ స్టూడెంట్

Negative Sentence

I am not a student.
నేను ఒక విద్యార్థిని/విద్యార్థి కాదు.
Pronunciation: ఐ యామ్ నాట్ అ స్టూడెంట్

Positive Sentence

She is from Hyderabad.
ఆమె హైదరాబాద్ నుండి వచ్చింది.

Negative Sentence

She is not from Hyderabad.
ఆమె హైదరాబాద్ నుండి రాలేదు.
Contraction: "is not" can be contracted to "isn't" (ఇజంట్)

Negative with DO, DOES, DID

For simple present and past tense sentences (without helping verbs), we use "do not", "does not", or "did not" to form negatives.

Don't (Do not)
చేయకు / చేయవద్దు
Positive: I speak English.
నేను ఇంగ్లీష్ మాట్లాడతాను.
Negative: I don't speak English.
నేను ఇంగ్లీష్ మాట్లాడను.
Usage: With I, You, We, They, Plural nouns
Doesn't (Does not)
చేయడు / చేయదు
Positive: He works here.
అతను ఇక్కడ పని చేస్తాడు.
Negative: He doesn't work here.
అతను ఇక్కడ పని చేయడు.
Usage: With He, She, It, Singular nouns
Didn't (Did not)
చేయలేదు
Positive: They came yesterday.
వారు నిన్న వచ్చారు.
Negative: They didn't come yesterday.
వారు నిన్న రాలేదు.
Usage: With all subjects in past tense
Important Rule

When using "doesn't" in negative sentences, the main verb returns to its base form (without 's' or 'es'). Example: She works → She doesn't work (not "doesn't works").
